Mayors Fulop, Stack & Baraka to Join Maria Teresa Montilla at Conference on Dominican Affairs

Paterson, NJ (February 4, 2015).— Jersey City Mayor Steven Michael Fulop, Union City Mayor Brian Stack and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka confirmed their participation at the 15th Annual NJ Conference on Dominican Affairs (CODA).

With the theme “On the Road to Power Via Coalition Building,” CODA is slated to take place on Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 8:30am to 4pm at Rutgers School of Law’s Center for Law & Justice located at 123 Washington Street Newark, NJ 07102.

“I look forward to welcome Mayors Fulop, Baraka and Stack to our annual Conference as we all celebrate both Black History Month and Dominican Heritage Month,” said Maria Teresa Montilla, President of the Institute for Latino Studies, which underwrites and coordinates CODA since its inception in 2001.

“I am happy they will pause in their busy schedules to join me in a frank and honest conversation about Jewish, Black and Latino Relations and the role of multicultural coalitions in community empowerment.”

“The Conference is the hottest ticket in town and the most salient annual event in the Latino calendar in the Tri-State Area and in the United States,” said Nestor Montilla, Sr., CODA Conference Chair. “I urge you to RSVP as soon as possible because space is limited. About:

Steven Michael Fulop is a Jewish American who currently is the Mayor of Jersey City. He grew up in a Romanian immigrant family in Edison, NJ. His father owned a delicatessen in Newark, NJ. Fulop often worked, and his mother, the daughter of Holocaust survivors, worked in an immigration services office helping others gain citizenship.

Brian P. Stack is a New Jersey born American politician who serves in the NJ Senate, where he represents the 33rd Legislative District and has also served as the Mayor of Union City, NJ since 2000. His father, a PATH train conductor, died in November 2003. At a young age the Stack family moved to Union City. Stack credits his mother for his political involvement.

Ras Baraka is the Mayor of Newark, NJ. He was previously a member of the Municipal Council of Newark. He is a Newark native and the son of widely acclaimed poet and activist Amiri Baraka and his wife Amina. Baraka was educated in the Newark Public Schools and subsequently earned a BA in Political Science from Howard University in Washington, DC, and an MA in Education Supervision from St. Peter’s University in Jersey City. He was principal of Central High School from 2007 until 2013.

Paterson, NJ (4 de Febrero, 2015).— Steven Michael Fulop, Alcalde de Jersey City, Brian P. Stack, Alcalde de Union City y Ras Baraka, Alcalde de Newark confirmaron su participacion en la 15va. Conferencia Para Asuntos Dominicanos de NJ (CODA).

Bajo el tema “Camino al Poder A Traves de Coaliciones,” CODA esta pautada a tomar lugar el Domingo, 22 de Febrero, 2015 de 8:30am a 4pm en la Rutgers School of Law’s Center for Law & Justice localizada en 123 Washington Street Newark, NJ 07102.

“Damos la bienvenida a los Alcaldes Fulop, Baraka y Stack a nuestra conferencia anual celebrando el Mes de la Herencia Dominicana y el Mes de la Historia Negra,” dijo María Teresa Montilla, Presidente del Institute for Latino Studies, que auspicia y organiza CODA desde el año 2001.

“Nos complace que tomen de su tiempo y se nos unan en una conversacion franca y honesta sobre las relaciones Latino/Negro/Judio y el PapeI de las coaliciones en el apoderamiento comunitario.”

Steven Michael Fulop es un Judío-Americano que, en el presente es el Alcalde de Jersey City. Creció en Edison, NJ en una familia Romaní inmigrante. Su padre era dueño de una delicatessen en Newark, NJ, donde Fulop a menudo trabajaba. Su madre, hija de sobrevivientes del Holocausto, trabajaba en una oficina de servicio al inmigrante, ayudando a otros a obtener ciudadanía.

Brian P. Stack es un político Estadounidense de nacimiento quien en el presente sirve en el Senado de NJ, representando el Distrito Legislativo 33 y es también Alcalde de Union City, NJ desde el año 2000. Su padre, un conductor de trenes PATH, falleció en Noviembre, 2003. A temprana edad, la familia Stack se estableció en Union City. Stack atribuye su pasión por la política a su madre.

Ras Baraka es el Alcalde de Newark, New Jersey. Previamente fue miembro del Consejo Municipal de Newark, de donde es nativo. Es hijo el poeta y activista Amiri Baraka y su esposa Amina. Baraka fue educado en el Sistema Escolar de Newark, obteniendo luego un BA en Ciencias Políticas de Howard University en Washington, DC, y un MA en Supervisión de Educación de St. Peter’s University en Jersey City. Fue Director de Central High School del año 2007 al año 2013.
