Newark Mayor Ras Baraka to Speak at NJ Conference on Dominican Affairs

Paterson, NJ (February 2, 2015)— Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka will speak at the 15th Annual Conference on Dominican Affairs slated to take place on Sunday, February 22, 2015 from 8:30am to 4pm at Rutgers School of Law on 123 Washington Street, Newark, NJ.

“Mayor Baraka attended our conference last year as a Councilman, and spoke passionately to students encouraging them to get an education and pursue their dreams; he shared his life story and explained to them why he has dedicated his life to public service and community empowerment,” said Maria Teresa Montilla, President of the Institute for Latino Studies. “ We are glad he is coming back to us this year as the Mayor of Newark to join me and a select group of invited panelists in a roundtable plenary to talk about Black, Jewish and Latino relations.”

Ras Baraka is currently the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey. He was previously a member of the Municipal Council of Newark and the principal of the city’s Central High School until he took an indefinite leave of absence to run for the 2014 Newark mayoral election, which he won on May 13, 2014. Baraka was sworn in as the city’s 40th mayor at ceremonies at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on July 1, 2014 for a four-year term.

A Newark native, Baraka is son of poet and activist Amiri Baraka and his wife Amina. Ras J. Baraka was educated in the Newark Public Schools and subsequently earned a BA in Political Science from Howard University in Washington, DC, and an MA in Education Supervision from St. Peter’s University in Jersey City. He was principal of Central High School from 2007 until 2013.
